A career as a Lawyer has been widely known and followed in India for decades now. However so far, while  thinking about  this career option the students and parents largely perceived it as a profession involving independent practice as a Lawyer that exposes the person to people in conflict, uncertain financial prospects , not so attractive workplaces ( excepting few like high court or  supreme court)

The Portrayal of a lawyer in various movies certainly added fuel to this perception while keeping the profession well known. 

Secondly a considerable number of people taking up law education after their graduation in streams like commerce and arts and then not pursuing a profession in Law has  further confused the upcoming generations about the career prospects. 

However as we progressed on the industrial and corporate fronts and as the social and environmental awareness increased,  multiple career options have opened up in the field of Law and have stabilized over last few years. 

In this article we take a look at 10 such attractive career options post the law degree. A knowhow of these options will help you crystallize your decision. 

 1. Corporate Lawyer:

Work Profile: Corporate lawyers provide legal advice to businesses on their legal rights, responsibilities, and obligations. They may assist in contract negotiations, mergers and acquisitions, and compliance issues.

An additional qualification like Company Secretary  adds significant value to this profile and increases the career prospects considerably for the lawyer in the corporate world. 

Where to Start from :  Check for vacancies in various companies / law firms  and apply for the job . You will be subject to a selection process which  may involve a written test and an interview 

Average Starting  Annual Income: ₹6-12 lakhs


2. Litigation Lawyer:

Work Profile: Litigation lawyers represent clients in court, arguing cases and presenting evidence. They may specialize in civil, criminal, or family law, depending on their interests.

Where to Start from : Intern with an established Lawyer / Law firm and then you may start your own practice 

Average Starting Annual Income: ₹5-10 lakhs

 

3. Intellectual Property Lawyer:

Work Profile: IP lawyers focus on protecting intellectual property rights, such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights. They may help clients with filing applications, enforcing rights, and handling infringement cases.

Where to Start from : You may either intern with a firm dealing in IPR or may appear and clear Patents Agent exam and start your own consultancy practice consultancy

Average Starting Annual Income: ₹6-12 lakhs

 

4. Cyber Lawyer:

Work Profile: Cyber lawyers advocate cases related to cybercrimes such as theft of personal information, and digital documents, cyberstalking, cyber threats such as cyberbullying, cyber terrorism, data protection, and other online crimes related to individuals or institutions / organizations 

Where to Start from : You may intern with Law firms/lawyers practicing in Cyber Laws and then start your own practice once you gain enough experience and confidence to start. Having a Postgraduate Diploma/certificate course in Cyber Laws after LLB would be of great advantage.  

Average Starting Annual Income: ₹7-12 lakhs

 

5. Tax Lawyer:

Work Profile: Tax lawyers specialize in tax law and assist individuals or businesses in understanding and navigating tax regulations. They may provide advice on tax planning, compliance, and represent clients in tax disputes.

Where to Start from : You may intern with Tax Law Specialized firms for experience and then start your own practice or continue working with Tax law firms 

Average Starting Annual Income: ₹6-12 lakhs

 

6. Family Lawyer:

Work Profile: Family lawyers handle legal matters related to family relationships, such as divorce, child custody, and adoption. They may also provide advice on prenuptial agreements and domestic violence issues.

Where to Start from : You may intern with Law firms / lawyers  specialized in Family Laws and subsequently start your own practice 

Average Starting  Annual Income: ₹4-8 lakhs

 

7. Legal Consultant in Multinational Companies:

Work Profile: Legal consultants in multinational companies provide legal advice on various matters, ensuring the company's operations comply with local and international laws. They may be involved in contract drafting, compliance, and risk management consultancy. 

Where to Start from : After gaining some experience through internship / job you may start your own consultancy firm and approach MNCs through professional Networks 

Average Starting  Annual Income: ₹8-15 lakhs

 

8. Arbitrator/Mediator:

Work Profile: Arbitrators and mediators help parties resolve disputes outside of the courtroom. They facilitate negotiations, weigh evidence, and make decisions to reach a fair resolution.

Where to Start fromOnce you have the necessary qualifications and experience, you can enroll in an institution that offers an arbitrator training program. Some of the most well-known institutions in India include the Indian Institute of Arbitration and Mediation and the Indian Council of Arbitration

Average Starting  Annual Income: ₹6-12 lakhs


9. Legal Journalism:

Work Profile: Legal journalists report on legal developments, analyze court cases, and provide insights into the legal system. They may work for newspapers, magazines, or online platforms.

Where to Start from: You may Start with interning at firms/companies in the field of Legal Journalism. thereafter you may choose to be an independent / free lance Legal Journalist

Average Starting  Annual Income: ₹4-8 lakhs


10. Judiciary   

            Work Profile : Judge @ sessions Courts / Co-operative courts / family courts / District                     Courts / High Courts / Supreme court . The Judge after careful consideration of the                             arguments made by Lawyers on both sides of the litigation case provides judgement/justice              strictly adhering to the constitutional principles and guidelines. This is government                             employment and the judges receive salary from the government. 

            Where to Start from : Appear and clear Judiciary Services Exams conducted by State or                 Central public / Judiciary  services boards 

            The average annual salary ranges from 12L- 40 Lakhs per annum as per the profile.                     Additional monthly and yearly  allowances, perks, and benefits  further make it quite                         attractive.

 It's important to note that the income figures are approximate and average. A lawyer who specializes in a field and develops expertise with a proven track record over few years stands to gain much more financial gains without any specific limit. Gaining practical experience through internships and networking can significantly impact career advancement and income potential.The income potential is certainly great both in independant practice as well as job in law firms or other organizations.  Students should explore areas that align with their interests and values for a fulfilling career in law.

Educational qualifications to be completed. : You need to complete a 3 year LLB post your graduation or a 5 year integrated Law degree course post grade 12. You may need to appear and qualify in CLAT or State Law CETs to get admitted for the law courses. You may also complete Post Graduation - LLM in Law . There are multiple Colleges affiliated to National Law university in addition to Multiple reputed Law colleges affiliated to various universities in India.
