Will YOUR MBA degree give you 10 Lac + ?
One of the career that has been always the "Go to" option for many students who don't find any specific branch like technology, biosciences or commerce interesting… is Management. Obviously doing an MBA is considered to be a gateway to management careers.
Interestingly, considering the fact that the educational sector has failed to equip Engineers with enough employability skills, over 80% of engineering graduates turn to management, post their engineering degree after having denied a deserving engineer a engineering college seat.
Even in top technology education centres like IITs, MBA from IIM or other top B schools still lures considerable students with its promise of high starting salaries and a fast paced career growth..
However as it is with all degree courses, MBA degree isn't a guarantee of success in getting you even a good job, forget success in life.
As far as securing a campus placement is considered, yes, some B schools do have a promising track record and they put in a lot of hard work to maintain that image..
but that's it.. what happens thereafter?
What we fail to analyze is what kind of job profiles are available in campus placements to these students these days ..? What happens to these students when they actually land up in corporates? . Does career of every MBA grad shoot up through the roof of his company? No absolutely not. Only chosen few actually end up living their dream of management careers
The student who dreamt of playing some important role in management of the company lands up mostly in frontline sales job in most of the cases. It's not that sales jobs are not good but if you ask the student if he had done MBA to take up sales job, answer would be mostly NO…
( like in last decade we had most engineers being recruited by IT companies since they were easily available at cheaper costs, nowadays corporates are recruiting MBA grads since they are available in abundance and at lesser cost for doing jobs which doesn't necessarily need a management degree and can be done better by any appropriate graduate or undergraduate.) But since they have a choice they are milking it . )
Why is this happening ? Simply because employability of even the management graduates is a big concern. An Employer has specific task to be done for which he wants to recruit a person but when he approaches the potential candidates in campuses or otherwise what he sees is fancy resume full of fake looking credentials, a smart looking candidate whose smartness doesn't go beyond the skin and unreasonable expectations against what the candidate brings to the table.
Management is far more than just smart looking Blazers and Trousers
Management is specific talent and skill. A manager needs considerable leadership skills to be successful.
Just like you need to have engineering aptitude, or medical or commerce aptitude to be successful in those fields , you need Management Abilities to become successful in Management..
You must have come across many cases where a sales or operations executive struggles or fails when he is promoted to managerial position after a successful performance at executive level. haven't you?
When it comes to Management, it has lot to do with overall personality than a specific talent.
Hence a mere Aptitude test that tests your Aptitudes like Numerical, Verbal, Spatial creative or other isn't enough to check your Management Role fitment.
A Good Management Potential candidate has to have
Excellent Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Skills
Reasonably good logical and analytical thinking ability.
Problem solving skills
Fairly high emotional quotient
Decision making skills
Fairly high self confidence and self esteem.
High cognitive skills
Administrative and people orientation
An ability to always keep an eye on macro view…
These and many other attributes are keys to a successful management career..
Fortunately now a days we do have excellent tools to measure such personality traits in you objectively and present before you a thorough SWOT analysis that helps you in taking the crucial decision of your life.
It is advisable to check these out in you before you think of taking up management career.. else you may end up having a mediocre career stagnated at certain level.
The Final word : Its not that if you have all the above your success is guaranteed.. because what you do with what you have will ultimately matter. But if tilling the land in scorching heat is something that cannot be avoided then knowing that you are potentially the better one in the competitive lot will help you accelerate on the path with the help of appropriate tools and use of your personality strengths.
Wishing you a great success ahead.
